Started in the Wavell Room, over a coffee.
In 2017 a group of friends attending the UK Defence Academy’s Intermediate and Command Staff Course (Land) (ICSC(L)) decided that it was time to establish an open platform to raise and discuss professional military issues. This team had a belief that this simple act could improve the UK Defence and Security discourse through more active engagement of the practitioner community and in doing so provide greater opportunity for UK professional military thought leadership.doit
The Wavell Room at the Defence Academy is a place where where Officers chat over coffee following lectures or seminars on the Army’s ICSC(L). More often than not, the tone of conversation is reflective, critical yet constructive but those thoughts an ideas wouldn’t make it any further than that discussion. In most cases this not only wouldn’t be a cause for concern but would be a good thing; however, there is always the possibility that these are some of the ideas that could shape our operational success in the future.
Since launching, the platform has grown in popularity, reach and diversity. The team of keen professionals who keep it moving has grown, as have the numbers of considered contributions from the wider defence and security community.
Over the intervening years we made a series of attempts to register as a charity and failed. With a need to provide financial stability and to capitalise on opportunities for further growth and development Wavell Room is now a UK registered company. Employing no staff but dependent on the contributions of a band of enthusiastic professionals across Defence, commerce, academia and multi-nationally who really care about realising our purpose.
We have a simple and enduring purpose; to contribute purposefully to the enhancement of UK Defence and Security discourse and provide further development to military professionals.
